PSC YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS

Hi everyone, this is a short report on just some of the youth activities at the Poulsbo Sportsman Club.  There are many events for our youth including, NRA Rifle Safety/Marksmanship,  Youth Group Shooting, Cowboy Action, Long Range 22 Silhouette, Black Powder, 4-H Smallbore, Trap & 5 Stand and Archery, just to name a few.

This report looks to focus on the 4-H kids who attended State and National Shooting events this year.  Two of our shooters, Matt Wyma and Ryan Konkler, spent much of their free time this last year preparing themselves at the club.  They excelled in their efforts to the point they qualified in State competition to attend the 4-H National Shooting Sports Competition.  Each of their stories follows;

4-H Archery

Matt Wyma

My name is Matthew Wyma and I am a member of the 4-H archery group shooting at PSC on Wednesday evenings.  As some of you know, I competed in the 4-H National archery tournament held in Kerrville, TX at the end of June.  I competed against 96 compound bow shooters from 31 States.  I am happy to report that it was a great learning experience and a very enjoyable competition with hurricane Alex putting a twist on the event.

The first day was the field round in which I placed 12th.  The second day was the FITA round in which I placed 6th.  The last and final day was the 3-D round.  I placed 23rd in this event with a score of 289 out of a possible 300.  Overall I placed 11th in the nation.

I would like to thank the other archers who come out every week and shoot their bows with me on Wednesdays at the 50 yard range.  I do not believe I could have placed this well without the assistance of these veteran archers such as John, Steve, Archie, and Shawn who are always willing to give advice.  I would also like to thank the PSC Board and general members for the support 4-H shooting sports have received over the past few years.

My future goals are to continue shooting with the archery group on Wednesdays as well as learn to shoot shot gun for a possible return to Nationals in two years to once again represent PSC and the State of Washington in the 4-H shooting sports.

4-H Smallbore

Ryan Konkler

First of all, I would like to thank the Poulsbo sports mans club for allowing the 4-H kids create a .22 Cal rifle club. Being able to use the range facilities made practice a lot easier to sight in rifles and use different ranges that were used in competition.

On my trip to Texas I took 51stplace out of a total of 77 kids. This was my first year shooting the .22 Cal rifle in competition so I was extremely happy in the way I placed. Though the weather was not kind with the presence of thunder storms and an obnoxious amount of rain, I still stuck it out. The range for the .22 Cal rifles were so wet and muddy that the range officers decided to put plywood down in the shooting lanes. This was a big help for all of the shooters until the rain came and started to make the plywood drift away as soon as the shooter went to get their targets. But after that, I was still glad to be able to compete.

Sincerely,

Ryan Konkler 4-H competitor

We are all very proud of these club members!  Those of us who volunteer to aid our youth are also very thankful for the great support of the Board of Directors and the general membership at the club.

All of you are invited and encouraged to witness our activities and even get involved if you have the desire.

Respectfully Submitted
